Beyond nasty breakouts and excessive oiliness, summer can do some funky things to your skin—like making it feel and look as dry as the Sahara. Between the scorching sun and harsh product ingredients, it’s easier than ever for your visage to feel parched. But it’s possible to have the fresh, dewy skin you’ve always dreamed of if you follow the words of wisdom from our panel of experts. We promise: dull, dry skin will be a thing of the past much sooner than you thought.

Know What to Look For
The key signs of dry skin during summer may actuallysurpriseyou. “Dehydrated skin can look flaky, red and dull,” explains Avon’s Executive Director of Global Innovation Marketing, Alina Gonzalez. “It can also feel itchy and taut, plus extremely dry skin can crack.”

Think Beyond Drinking Water
Remember that old beauty tip of drinking eight glasses of water? Sadly, it may no longer be enough. “Doing your best to maintain a healthy lifestyle will yield the best results,” says Space NK Beauty Advisor, Jennifer Flores. “That routine includes drinking water regularly. However, eight glasses of water alone won’t give us that lit-from-within glow.”

Read Your Labels Carefully
What’s in your products is equally as important as what they promise to deliver. Want to add extra moisture? Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, argan oil, green tea, vitamins A, C and E, Co Enzyme Q, and aloe vera, advises Dr. Craig Austin. “[You should also] stay away from products containing alcohol and harsh chemicals, which can zap moisture,” he explains.

Think About Long-Term Effects
When your skin is dehydrated, its not at the optimal level to protect itself against fine lines and wrinkles. “Hydration is necessary for your body and skin to function properly,” explains Gonzalez. “The fundamental overall health and well-being of our skin is highly dependent on skin being properly hydrated. When skin is dehydrated, not only does it look and feel uncomfortable, all the key functions of our skin may be compromised, leading to premature aging and skin that lacks a healthy appearance.”

Incorporate a Serum into Your Routine
When your skin feels dry and tight, your first reaction might be to grab your favorite face lotion—but you might want to reconsider. “A moisturizer is your quick fix but invest in a good serum,” shares Flores. “A serum will do the majority of the hard work in your skincare line-up.” Most serums are designed to penetrate the skin easily and can target almost any concern you may have including moisture retention. She recommends using Bakel Deep Hydration Serum.

Minimize Time in the Sun
We love a golden glow as much as you do, but remember those beaming rays often do more harm than good. “Sun exposure can lead to dry skin, especially when you’re not wearing sunscreen,” explains Gonzalez. “Using a moisturizer with broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection with an SPF of 15 or greater such as ANEW Clinical Skinvincible Multi-Shield Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 50 can help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays and reduce your chances of drying out your skin.”

Use A Toner + Exfoliate
“A toner is meant to rebalance the PH levels in the skin that were most likely depleted due to a harsh cleanser,” explains Flores. “Most cleansers are not overly aggressive or stripping to the skin when using one suited to your specific skin type. However, incorporating a form of exfoliation to remove dry, dead skin buildup will allow your products to work at a more optimal level on the skin.”

Consider Taking A Supplement
A balanced diet and supplements are important for your skin as well as your overall health. “Supplements such as fish oils containing essential nutrients associated with generating and maintaining hydration,” shares Gonzalez.
