Decorating donuts has become a popular trend. Whether you've seen them in fancy glazed piles at a wedding or dipped one into coffee for a morning boost, sprinkles and all, they've made their way into many corners of North American culture. If you're going to be making your own donuts, a great way to start is by replicating the classics, like peanut butter and jelly or strawberry shortcake donuts. In time, you'll have a boatload of your own ideas.

Ingredients

Birthday Cake Donuts

  • Plain donuts
  • cup (59 ml) confectioners' sugar
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) confetti cake mix
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons (15 to 30 ml) milk
  • Food coloring

Peanut Butter and Jelly Donuts

  • Plain or jelly-filled donuts
  • cup (120 ml) confectioners' sugar
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) raspberry or strawberry jam
  • 1 teaspoon (4.9 ml) water
  • Peanut butter baking chips

Strawberry Shortcake Donuts

  • Plain donuts
  • Strawberries
  • Basil or flowers
  • 1 teaspoon (4.9 ml) pure vanilla extract
  • cup (160 ml) heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) confectioners' sugar

Steps

Making Birthday Cake Donuts

  1. Whisk all of your ingredients, minus the donut, into your saucepan.The kind of food coloring is your choice. Mix everything together until it is consistent with no clumps.If you're having trouble with consistency, you can sift your sugar through a sieve before adding it to the mix.
  2. Prepare your work area.Set down your mixing bowl beside your donuts and set up a draining rack in a half sheet pan. Make sure that all of your ingredients and tools are easily accessible. Prepare some napkins in case things get messy.

  3. Spoon your sweetened whipped cream onto the donut.Use a measuring spoon to portion out about 4 scoops onto your donut. Afterwards use the back of it to apply it over the donut. This will provide a proper foundation for your decorations. .
  4. Apply basil leaves or fresh flowers.Basil leaves are a great way to top off this donut. For something more fancy, you can use flowers.During the spring and summer, you'll have plenty of of options to pluck for your donut decorations.
    • If you use flowers, make sure that they are organic and unsprayed (select supermarkets carry them in the produce area). You can also grow your own in your backyard.

  • For those using multiple colors, dip color by color to avoid having to re-melt them after they set.
