Baked Donuts Easy Decorating Ideas - Video Demonstration

How to Decorate Donuts

Three Methods:

Decorating donuts has become a popular trend. Whether you've seen them in fancy glazed piles at a wedding or dipped one into coffee for a morning boost, sprinkles and all, they've made their way into many corners of North American culture. If you're going to be making your own donuts, a great way to start is by replicating the classics, like peanut butter and jelly or strawberry shortcake donuts. In time, you'll have a boatload of your own ideas.

Birthday Cake Donuts

  • Plain donuts
  • cup (59 ml) confectioners' sugar
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) confetti cake mix
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons (15 to 30 ml) milk
  • Food coloring

Peanut Butter and Jelly Donuts

  • Plain or jelly-filled donuts
  • cup (120 ml) confectioners' sugar
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) raspberry or strawberry jam
  • 1 teaspoon (4.9 ml) water
  • Peanut butter baking chips

Strawberry Shortcake Donuts

  • Plain donuts
  • Strawberries
  • Basil or flowers
  • 1 teaspoon (4.9 ml) pure vanilla extract
  • cup (160 ml) heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) confectioners' sugar

Making Birthday Cake Donuts

  1. Whisk all of your ingredients, minus the donut, into your saucepan. The kind of food coloring is your choice. Mix everything together until it is consistent with no clumps. If you're having trouble with consistency, you can sift your sugar through a sieve before adding it to the mix.
  2. Prepare your work area.Set down your mixing bowl beside your donuts and set up a draining rack in a half sheet pan. Make sure that all of your ingredients and tools are easily accessible. Prepare some napkins in case things get messy.
  3. Dip your donuts into the glaze.Either dip them one by one or spoon the glaze over them using a small measuring spoon.Allow the excess glaze to drip over the sides. Afterwards, set them on a draining rack placed in a half sheet pan.
    • For dipping, hold each donut with three fingers and your thumb. Dip it about halfway down, keeping even around the edges as much as possible. While the donut is upside down, shake off any excess glaze.
    • Customize your glazes. If you want to change things up, divide your glaze into any number of separate bowls. Afterwards, you can add different food colorings to each.
    • Apply sprinkles. If you're not using mixed sprinkles, dump various colors into your ice cube tray and mix them up. This is a simple and effective way of organizing your materials. It also allows you to mix and match your favorite sprinkle colors.

Creating Peanut Butter and Jelly Donuts

  1. Whisk all of your ingredients together.Put all of the ingredients, minus the donuts and chips, into a mixing bowl. Whisk them together until they have a smooth consistency.
  2. Setup your workstation.Make sure that all of your ingredients are within arms reach. Again, place a draining rack into a half sheet pan. Keep napkins handy in case things get messy.
  3. Pour the glaze onto your donuts.Use a measuring spoon to gently pour the glaze over each one. You can sift the sugar through a sieve before adding it to the mix for a better consistency. Use a knife to smooth it out like you would spread peanut butter onto a sandwich.
  4. Sprinkle your peanut butter baking chips onto the donut. If you're not too hot on this decoration, you can substitute it as you please. For example, you can sprinkle chopped peanuts, Reese bites, or other peanut butter-flavoured products.

Making Strawberry Shortcake Donuts

  1. Clean your strawberries.Start off by washing them under clean running water. Keep moving them gently to ensure that they are properly cleaned. Remove the green tops from each one. If a little bit is left behind, don't worry too much. Afterwards, let them dry in a small bowl.
  2. Whip your heavy cream.Add the heavy cream into your electric mixer with the whisk attached. Set it to medium speed and whisk it for 2 to 4 minutes. Afterwards, add in your vanilla extract and confectioners' sugar.Continue whipping on medium speed for around 2 to 3 minutes or until the soft peaks return.
  3. Spoon your sweetened whipped cream onto the donut.Use a measuring spoon to portion out about 4 scoops onto your donut. Afterwards use the back of it to apply it over the donut. This will provide a proper foundation for your decorations. .
  4. Apply basil leaves or fresh flowers.Basil leaves are a great way to top off this donut. For something more fancy, you can use flowers.During the spring and summer, you'll have plenty of of options to pluck for your donut decorations.
    • If you use flowers, make sure that they are organic and unsprayed (select supermarkets carry them in the produce area). You can also grow your own in your backyard.
  5. Finished.

  • If you're going to decorate a large number of donuts, create a visual table chart. Using this chart can help you determine how many donuts are dipped into each color, and the corresponding decoration.
  • For those using multiple colors, dip color by color to avoid having to re-melt them after they set.
  • If you find that your glazes are too thick, use less liquid. Or if you like them on the thicker side, use more. Just remember using too much liquid will prevent your glaze from sticking to your donut. If this ever happens, add some more icing sugar until you get the right thickness.
