How? First you knit your knitting swatch, if you want to knit in a fantasy pattern, knit your swatch in this stitch,
then determine your, now you can choose a knitting pattern with the right gauge,
this way it will always fit, no need for special yarns or needles, so simple.

These women knitting patterns are based on standard woman sizes in America.
Take a look at the, on the left side, in the navigation bar.
Then; keep in mind; You don't have a standard size.! Nobody does! Adapt your pattern.
The amount of stitches are more important than rows,
because the required length of the garment, are in inches too.
Tip; combine knitting with crochet or embroidery.

Check the gauge as you are knitting your garment, you don't always knit with the same tension.
Also check every couple of inches for mistakes. It is easier to fix them after only a few rows knitted.

Check when you are knitting the length from wrist to armhole and from hem to armhole too.
If the sleeve stitches meet at the underarm, it fits.
If it seems too small, do a few more increase rounds, or keep knitting until desired length.
Too big, then you have to decrease and increase, more rapidly, then usual.
And stop knitting at the desired length. Check a couple of times while you are knitting.

Tips for regular inch increments
17.7 = 17.75 = 17 3/4 inches. 18,8 = 18.75 = 18 3/4 inches. 9.9 = 10 inches and so on.
Knowing this will make it easy to just round up or down as they are such small increments.

The numbers; for instance 8 x 12 = your.
So you have to knit a tension swatch first, then choose your pattern with the right.

Gauge Notations
Most knitting projects include a gauge notation. The gauge, or the number of stitches or rows per inch,
is determined by the size royal of the needles and the weight of the yarn. Always work a gauge swatch
(below) to see whether your tension equals the gauge specified in the instructions. If you have too
many stitches per inch, you are working too tightly: Change to larger needles. If you have too few
stitches per inch, you are working too loosely: Change to smaller needles. For practice sessions, choose
medium-size needles (size 8 or 9) and a smooth, light-color yarn so you can see your work easily.
To make a gauge swatch: Using the recommended needles and yarn, cast on a few more stitches than
the number indicated by the gauge printed on the yard band for 4 inches (10 cm). Work the pattern for
at least 4 inches. Loosely bind off or remove the swatch from the needles. Place a ruler over the
swatch; count the number of stitches across 1 inch and the number of rows down 1 inch, including
fractions of stitches rows. If you have too many stitches and rows, switch to larger needles; if you have
too few stitches, use smaller needles.

SET-IN SHOULDERS:
The default instructions for sweaters are to cast off set-in shoulders in sections over a number of rows
(e.g. cast off 9 sts at the beginning of the next 6 rows). However, many knitters find that short-rowing provides
a smoother slope on the shoulders. When the short-rowing is completed, the stitches can be either cast off or
placed on holders or waste yarn. Cast off stitches would be sewn together following the standard  instructions.
Live stitches are more likely to be grafted together for a flatter shoulder seam.

Do you want to knit with a large needle size?
This will speed up your knitting time, but you have to knit with bulky or worsted yarns.
I find these sweaters always make me look like the Michelin Man, not very flattering.

Tip; use two strands of thin yarn held together (= double thread).
For instance; use yarn for needle size 4 mm, and knit on needle size 7 mm, with 2 threads.
This will give your garment light weight and a very delicate look.

One of my is knitted this way, it is the cardigan with the crocheted flowers.

You can’t cast off more than 1 stitch, at the end of the row,
so if the pattern says; Dec 2 st at each end of every alternate row,
it means; Cast off 2 stitches, knit to end of row ( or round ), turn and cast off 2 stitches, knit to end of row.

Learn to do all decreasing and increasing, not in the first or last stitch of a row, but, in the second
or third stitches in from the edge. This will give you a smoother edge for finishing. (fashion cast-off)

PATTERNS NECK STYLES

Patterns with no ribbing are great to knit fair-isle or Norwegian patterns with a border.

Ribbing has a strong tendency to contract laterally, forming small pleats in which the purl stitches recede and
the knit stitches come forward. Thus, ribbing is often used for cuffs, sweater hems and, more generally,
any edge that should be form-fitting. The elasticity depends on the number of knit/purl transitions;
1x1 ribbing is more elastic than 2x2 ribbing, etc. However, some cable patterns may "pull in" more than ribbing
(have a smaller gauge); in such cases, a ribbed border may flare out instead of contracting.

You can use any knitting stitch and knit with any knitting yarn you like, if it has a similar gauge.

Needle size is not so important, every knitter knits differently. When you are looking at a pattern,
it is the gauge or tension swatch that really matters. This is the base for all my basic knitting patterns.

Cable patterns tend to "pull in," giving more stitches per width than stockinette, garter or seed stitch.

Cables are usually made on a background of reverse stockinette stitch. You will need a cable needle.
You can use stitch markers to set off the stitches to be cabled. Go to my for patterns.

I have created knitting patterns with gauges for cable sweaters in 6 sizes.
I think drop shoulders are the best to knit a cable sweater.
If you send me your tension swatch, with digital photo, I will create a pattern for you.

Knitting tips

And here is a hint about shoulder seams that most knitters will find marvelously useful.
3 Needle bind off.
Work both sides of the shoulder seams, front and back, and do not cast off either until both are
done. Then hold the two needles together and cast off both rows together.
In this way you are not only saved the bother of sewing an intricate seam-you are also certain that
these important seams fit perfectly together, stitch for stitch.
If you follow these hints your hand-knitted garments will have that neat, "professional" look.
Elaborate patterns are best worked in a plain yarn.
Fancy yarns, which are of them selves decorative,
lose their character when produced in elaborate stitches.
The beauty of such wool is enhanced by plain stitches and by good style and fit.
If your tension ( gauge ) is not the same as that given in the knitting instructions,
it is better to change to different needles, as tension is a personal matter and very difficult to change.
Unsightly hem marks show after a coat has been lengthened.
How can you remove them?
Rub the wrong side with a cloth dipped in salt, then iron with a damp cloth.
How can you stop a paper pattern from slipping on thin material when cutting out a new garment?
Press the two together lightly with a warm iron.
How can you cut flimsy materials cleanly and easily?
Heat your scissors in boiling water; the hot steel will cut cleanly.
How can you thread a needle with wool?
Fold the end of the wool back and thread with the loop thus formed,
or first thread the needle with double cotton, pass the wool through the loop made by the cotton,
pull the cotton back through the needle and the wool will be drawn through the eye.
If you knit socks, how can you prevent them from shrinking or becoming lumpy?
Put your new skeins of wool into hot water for one minute, squeeze gently, and hang out to dry.
Only then should you wind your wool into balls for knitting.
What is the best way to make sure that your tension ( gauge ) is correct when knitting?
Cast on about 16 to 20 stitches, and work a piece in stocking-stitch about two inches long.
Press lightly on the wrong side, and count the number of stitches across one inch and then the
number of rows across one inch.
How do you restore a knitted garment which has gone baggy and out of shape?
Put the garment on a flat surface and cover with a wet towel.
After two or three hours it will be damp enough to mould back into shape.
Use another similar knitted or fabric garment as a guide, and smooth out with a firm hand.
Leave until dry.
How do you keep white and pastel-colored garments clean when knitting them?
Make sure your hands are always clean when handling the wool.
Rub a little talcum powder on them from time to time and keep the work in a spotless white cloth
when not in use.
